Education

Education gives us a way to encourage the humane treatment of all animals through interaction, sharing information, stories, and fun activities. We believe that through education we will help to improve the lives of animals in our homes and communities today and for generations to come.  It is a vital component in our purpose of preventing cruelty to animals.

Nicole Fensom is our new Community Liaison and Education Officer and comes to us with a long history of SPCA voluntary work, including fostering of pets and livestock.  She has worked in animal control and has wildlife rescue experience, and dog training and sports experience.

She is passionate about responsible animal ownership and welfare.

We have Presentations aimed for all students from youth through to mature and can tailor our message to meet your requirements

We discuss Animal Care and Welfare based on everyday situations and the basic rights that an animal is entitled to under the Animal Welfare Act of 1999.

We also cover the large role the SPCA plays within all our communities, highlighting the enormous issue of abandonment and neglect.

Teaching children that empathy through compassion for animals can encourage the same behavior towards humans for the betterment of society as a whole, because research shows clear links between animal cruelty and interpersonal and family violence.

Typical topics covered are:

  • Basic needs of animals (5 freedoms)

  • Role and history of SPCA in the community

  • Animals have feelings

  • Safety around dogs (bite prevention

  • Work of the Tauranga SPCA and the challenges we face

  • Animal Welfare legislation

  • The role of the Community in animal welfare and how people can help

  • Humane dog training

We have a gentle dog available to bring along to pre-schools and primary schools and on occasion may be able to bring along shelter animals.

Animal centre tours

Our animal centre tours offer a fun and exciting way to learn about the SPCA. Tours can be provided for groups eight years of age or older.

The tour visits most areas of the shelter and is a great way to learn how we help animals, about reducing and preventing problems like pet overpopulation and disease, about the services we offer and about the different ways individuals can help animals and prevent cruelty to them.

There is no fee to our education programme, instead we ask for donations, either towels/blankets/food/clean newspapers/toys etc, or a gold coin donation.
